FLORIST
For the love of flowers
Nestled on the High Street, just opposite the war memorial, experienced florist Sandy Miles opened her beautiful flower shop, Milestones Florist, in 2000. In this issue of Oundle Life, Sandy tells us about her passion for flowers...
What made you choose Oundle? I lived in London for 10 years and it became very busy, especially with us starting a family. We came up from London and as we drove through North Street I knew it was for us. It’s a fabulous place to bring a young family up. So as soon as I saw the beautiful flower shop for sale, I said: “This is the dream!” I love everything about the town.
Tell us more... In London I worked for a high class florist, and while there I showcased at Chelsea Flower Show. I bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to my floristry.
What is the best thing about your job? The excitement of buying beautiful flowers, plants and then being able to transform them into arrangements that bring joy to my customers.
Favourite flowers for sale today? Eustoma and Helleborus.
Most famous person you’ve ever had in your shop? We frequently have Lords and Ladies visit the shop. We have also served TV presenters, actors, footballers and pop stars.
If you could swap your shop for another one on the High Street, which one would it be? There is no need to consider swapping my little shop, it’s ideal in all aspects.
Most challenging moment? When I arranged flowers for the royal family. They wanted pedestals with tulips and other spring flowers. Early spring flowers with a sap are always difficult to put in oasis. They have a tendency to grow, which means the heads of the flowers are not where you want them.
Most unusual request you’ve had? The funeral work, making tributes for builders that have passed. I have been asked to make various tools out of flowers – quite a challenge.
