Moving into the post of Assistant Regimental Secretary for the Mercian Regiment in Staffordshire, also brought with it the responsibility for acting as Secretary to the Staffordshire Regimental Association and I should say at the outset, that I wish to thank Major Glynn Ireland
In May, Hednesford Branch were instrumental in having a memorial stone laid at the Hednesford War Memorial, bearing the name of Cpl Stephen Anderson who was killed in action in Northern Ireland in May 1984. The dedication service was conducted by Father David Smith from
the Garrison Church of St George at Whittington.
The annual reunion in September was
a great success and thanks must go to Hednesford Branch for helping to organise
Stephen Anderson’s Memorial Dedication Service – 29 May 2016 – Hednesford
for guiding me through the Association Business in his capacity as Chairman when I first arrived. I also received a very warm welcome from the Branch Members and learning that the STAFFORDS veterans had actually constructed the
Staffordshire Regiment’s
Memorial at the National
Memorial Arboretum
themselves under the
expert supervision of
Dave Bradshaw was
truly astounding. There
was a great turn out for
the Gulf War Commemoration ceremony on 27 February 2016, where the service was conducted by Padre Keith Parry and I had my first visit to the Kings Head afterwards. The Royal opening of the Memorial Garden in the grounds of the Staffordshire Regiment Museum by HRH the Duke of Gloucester on 7 April 2016 was also a very special event and again it is impressive that the STAFFORDS built this memorial too with generous financial support from a local business.

this year’s event. It was well supported this year with a good turnout
in the Church for the Service at St Chad’s in Lichfield. The President of the Association
Lt Col (Retd) Giles
Woodhouse, presented 4 President’s Certificates of Appreciation,
to Major (Retd) Jim Massey for his work as the Regimental and Association Secretary over the past twelve years; to Major Glynn Ireland for his support in the post of the SRA Chairman for the past three years;
to Arnold Clark Motor Company for their generous financial support, which part funded the construction of the Museum Memorial Garden and to Mr Graham Mellors of Hednesford Branch for his carpentry work on the benches we maintain at the
