Tug of War Update Major Pope
Having scored well during the Tug of War season, the 1 MERCIAN team were lucky enough to receive one of the coveted invites to the Braemar Gathering at the beginning of September. The Braemar Gathering is the oldest and most famous of the traditional Highland Games and attracts thousands of competitors and spectators from around the world. Among the many visitors are HRH the Queen and Prince Philip who attend each year and present the trophies. The Arena sits in a large bowl in the heart of the Cairngorm Mountains and is big enough to host multiple sports concurrently. While Tug of War was our chosen sport it is far from the only spectacle with others including massed pipes and drums, Highland dancing, fell running and the well known tossing the cabre.
The Tug of War is one of the exclusively military sports and includes twelve of the best teams from the three services. This year the Army entered eight teams while
