Free seed for all NVS members
We are delighted to report that D.T. Brown, one of our key partners, have very kindly provided every member with a packet of free lettuce seed, called “Winter Density AGM”. You will find your free packet (worth £1.95) in this Summer magazine for you to grow, planting seeds from next month.
This Lettuce is an outstanding dark green cos/romaine lettuce. Like a larger version
of Little Gem in shape and
flavour, you will not be
plenty for you to do lots of repeat sowings and/or share in your affiliated organisation/ club.
Why not check out DTBrown’s website; www.dtbrownseeds.co.uk and have a browse and take a look at their gardening advice where there is lots of valuable growing information (click on “gardening advice” at the bottom of their web page).
disappointed by this reliable lettuce. It is very reliable, has excellent frost resistance and was given the Award
of Garden Merit (AGM). This type of lettuce, once harvested, keeps well in the fridge too (they don’t go brown quickly)

Also check out the NVS website’s Library section for one of the newly released NVS growing leaflets which covers growing lettuce. This will give you some additional hints and tips, from ground preparation, right through to harvesting.
We would like to thank DT Brown, once again for their generous support and also
You can sow this lettuce all
year round, however DT Brown recommend sowing outdoors August to April outside or in an unheated greenhouse as, like most lettuce, the seed of Winter Density lettuce requires cool temperatures to germinate. Sow at a depth of 1.5cm (1⁄2 inch). Space rows approximately 30cm(1foot) apart and thin out to 15cm (6inches) apart.
Repeat sowings every 2-3 weeks for a continuous supply throughout the winter. Note; plants can be harvested as baby lettuce in about 30-40 days. Plants mature in approximately 55-65 days. Thanks to DT Brown, your free seed packet contains approximately 1,200 seeds, so there is
Gareth Cameron for his hard work liaising with all our partners, so have a go at growing this tasty salad crop and lettuce know how you get on (sorry, that was my bad joke!).
Good luck and enjoy your crop.
 AGM vacant officer roles
You may be aware that the role of Membership Registrar has been vacant since Neil Hope stood down in 2017.
At the time, the Trustees divided the various tasks up to ensure continuity. We subsequently developed changes and introduced the new centralised membership system in 2020.
This action has now eased the role of Membership Registrar and Norman Dickinson kindly put his name forward at the April Trustee meeting (refer AGM agenda). Of course, if anyone else has an interest in this role, please submit your nomination to the National Secretary, Fiona Shenfield by the end of July.
The role includes some of
the following main activities; Maintaining an up-to-date database of all NVS members, ensuring
that all membership data held
on file is fully compliant with the Data Protection Act 2018, acting
as conduit for the passing of information from the NVS to
the membership and Branches, providing membership reports to the Executive Committee, Responding to NVS membership queries from members and the general public, working with the National Treasurer regarding membership financial transactions & submitting the NVS annual Gift Aid claim.
Also, our Assistant Secretary, Mark Hall has recently decided to hang up his trusty pencil and step down at the forthcoming AGM after almost 10 years in this role and a total of almost 30 years involved
in Trustee meetings and I think
he deserves a well-earned rest, thankyou Mark.
If anyone has an interest in this role, of which the key requirement is to record and produce the minutes of every Trustee meeting & AGM, to assist the National Secretary, be part of the Trustee team and provide input and guidance for the Trustees, please submit your nomination to the National Secretary, Fiona Shenfield by the end of July.
