expect from their membership. Please complete the survey it will be very useful to the trustees to guide them on what members want, if you are not getting what you would like please let us know.
Graeme Baggaley, (see page 19), has sent an interesting article on Asparagus,
not only the growing but also using and I
will give his asparagus soup recipe a go. If you have the space asparagus is well worth growing and is ready at a time when there are not that many crops available. Emily Plumb has written about her experience at moving and re-erecting a greenhouse. There are a number of second-hand greenhouses available so this is worth considering if you cannot afford a new one, you will never regret having a greenhouse.
Graeme and Collette show why Jersey is an active DA and a popular holiday destination with plenty happening on the Island from carrot competitions. Graeme’s Jersey Royals and really interestingly growing lemons for sale commercially. This
intrigued me no-end, a good way of reducing food imports and food miles
which many of you will know is one of my concerns. Hopefully commercial and even amateur lemon growing can become viable in the U.K. and I look forward to seeing them on the show bench and Gerry Edwards giving us a run down on the growing of them!
To try and encourage more members
to grow later crops in their gardens and allotments I have penned an article on summer sowing. All of the vegetables covered can still be sown now so order some seed or even plug plants promptly and you could be harvesting crop from late August through to next spring depending
on what you grow. Your aim should be fresh vegetables for Christmas dinner and through into the hungry gap period of late April / May. Keep those food miles down!
This edition also contains the annual report, agenda and accounts ready for the AGM in September so if you are attending please take your magazine with you.
Hopefully there is plenty to interest you in this magazine, if not please let me know what you would like covered and I will see if I can find someone to write an article or even better send me one to include in the next edition.
Happy growing.
