2 MERCIAN Boxing Championship goes down to the wire
Soldiers from across 2 MERCIAN took part in a battalion boxing night at Dale Barracks, Chester in October.
Individual company’s competed against each other, with D (DRAGON) Company emerging victorious on
the final night. It was a tightly fought contest throughout and completed an arduous week of demanding bouts.
A huge amount of hard work
and personal sacrifice was
put in by the boxers, many of
whom had spent since late April training and Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Ben Wilde MBE congratulated all on their efforts. The evening and training camp is part of wider preparations for developing the 2 MERCIAN boxing squad ahead of the 2016 Army Boxing Competition.
The 2 MERCIAN boxing team secured
a place in the semi-finals of the Army Championships in March, with an excellent victory against The Yorkshire Regiment. The Rest of the World / British Forces Cyprus Boxing Final between 2 MERCIAN and 2 YORKS at Episkopi Boxing Gym, Cyprus, ended in a 6-3 victory for the MERCIAN’s.
Private Mitchell, the Battalion’s representative in the welterweight bout
took inspiration from his Dad Captain ‘Baz’ Mitchell, a MERCIAN Officer who flew all the way to Cyprus to see the fight on Leon’s 21st birthday. Elsewhere, Corporal Griffiths CGC (Conspicuous Gallantry Cross) was particularly unlucky in the Light Welter Weight bout, losing on points to the dismay of the crowd.
