deployment allowed time for the sections
to get to know one another and integrate the Croatian Forces. Sect Comds were allowed time to train their own sections and develop SOPs. The terrain was complex; therefore SOPs had to be adapted to suit the ground. Starting at a low level, and thus allowing junior commanders develop their sections was essential to the success of the deployment. The close country, high temperatures and occasional heavy rainfall made for a challenging environment. The ground was undulating and had many rocky areas, with thick vegetation and made for very hard going. The training area allowed commanders to test their troops physical and mental endurance to the full.
The Croatian Army were heavily involved throughout and provided a rifle platoon, drivers and medics to conduct bilateral training. The Croatian Platoon trained alongside the Close Combat Cadre
and at times created hybrid platoons to enhance combined understanding. Both the 4 MERCIAN and Croatian troops demonstrated their TTPs to each other.
The Croatians were immensely supportive and are keen to conduct more integrated training with 4 MERCIAN and UK forces. By
the end of the exercise there was in effect a single multi-national Coy working on hybrid TTPs.
In the end, aim was achieved successfully with Basic Close Combat Skills being greatly improved and 11 Pte Soldiers becoming qualified as Infantry Section 2ICs on a DCbt authorised cadre. The complex terrain and varied weather provides a testing environment not found in the UK. The greater value of the exercise is that It provides an
invaluable platform for bilateral
relations between the UK and
a NATO / EU partner. The
main benefit of exercising
Croatia was the interaction
with a foreign army and
the exchange of ideas.
The training area and
climate provided an
arduous environment
in which to operate in.
The exercise was a
complete success and
an amazing experience
for all.
