The Scot’s Abroad
After a great Scottish Branch Championships in Aberdeen, some
of our Scottish Branch members then looked to exhibit further afield. The
next weekend (7th/8th Sept) was the North East Horticultural Society (NEHS) show, organised by John Soulsby and his team and was held at the Beamish Living Museum for the first time. Gareth Cameron, John Currie, Linda Stocks, Billy Reid, Ian Simpson, Fiona Shenfield, Jim Pearson, Grace Pearson, Graham Taylor and Susan Taylor all attended the show. The venue was fantastic and the show, which was opened by the actor, Robson Green was an added bonus.
Billy Reid started off with a magnificent set of stump carrots. Ian Simpson won
the peas and white Nadine potatoes and came 2nd in the four x1’s collection. John Currie was award 2nd with his dish of nine Maisey tomatoes, a 3rd with his Sherine Potatoes and 3rd with his Kestrel Potatoes. Ian Simpson won the15 point collection (which included another nice clean set
of the Sweet Bell Turnips, like the ones
in Aberdeen) and Jim Pearson came 3rd (including Sweet Bell Turnips and Relon Broad Beans), Jim also came 2nd in the Millenium Class and 3rd with his peas and 3rd with a nice pair of Celery. Hosting the show at the Beamish Museum was a delight for the exhibitors and the public alike. The Northern Branch also put on
a very stylish and informative display to promote the NVS and for the public to enjoy.
On to the next weekend and a trip down to Ripon for the Northern Branch Champs and the Harrogate Autumn Show, Keith Brand and Jim Pearson had a 1st prize with
a nice pair of club root resistant Zaragoza Cauliflowers, a 3rd with his Celery, a 1st with the 20 point veg collection , which also included Celery. Jim also got a 3rd with his peas and a 4th in the 6 x one’s collection.
Jim reflected that his improvement with Celery this year was down to the helpful information he received at the 2023’s Scottish Branch Seminar, when he asked the question of our expert panel about
