Sussex DA
In September we held our mini show at Ashurst and although we were down on entries this year, we were not disappointed with the quality of the exhibits. Sylvia Pocock FNVS kindly agreed to judge for us.
Barry Newman FNVS won the Best in Show for his Shallots while Gordon Cooper won the trophy for most points. Gordon and his wife Delia arranged a quiz which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
As well as the Southern Branch hosting the Nationals at Ardingly (South of England Agricultural Society Autumn Show and Horse Trials) this year the Sussex DA
were also involved in managing the South of England Agricultural Society (SEAS) competition in a separate area of the
show ground. The competition was well supported with upwards of 90 exhibits including flowers, vegetables and fruit. For the first time NVS Judge Sylvia Pocock FNVS judged, with Richard Hilson FNVS acting as the Show manager.
Barry Newman FNVS had a very good day winning both the cup for gaining the highest number of points as well as Best in Show for his trug of vegetables. There still remains an unsolved mystery, however, as overnight 4 pickling shallots mysteriously disappeared. The police were unable to help solve the puzzle but there was a
rumour that rodent footprints in the sand could have been a clue as to what had happened.
A visit to the Caley Brothers mushroom farm in October proved to be very informative. 14 members were treated to a most enjoyable talk by Jodie, who with her
sister are Gold medal winners at Chelsea. It was truly fascinating to see so many different types of mushrooms being grown, together with hearing how they do it.
We haven’t got the room here to go into details, but you can find more information on their website www.caleybrothers.co.uk
