Northamptonshire is a county rich in history that deserves national recognition – international, in fact, given the Washington connection.
We have two of the three surviving Eleanor Crosses, while our great houses have long been celebrated, a traveller of 1832 remarking that “country seats and villas are to be seen at every step”.
Meanwhile we are blessed with a glorious array of churches, with two that share the name of ‘All Saints’ to the fore: the village church in Brixworth, with its Anglo-Saxon handsomeness; and the town church of Northampton, whose clear, clean lines recall the finest architectural instincts of Charles II’s reign.
But the narrative of Northamptonshire is not merely the hackneyed tale of “squires and spires”. Ours is a patchwork of many threads: not all of them are gilded, but each one remains essential for the cohesive understanding of our past.
Yes, there is a duty to preserve and conserve this glorious heritage. But there is equally a need to celebrate it.This is something that the Northamptonshire Heritage Forum does with pride.
