ROYAL MILITARY SCHOOL
TOF MUSIC
he British Army’s fourteen regular bands, as part of the Royal Corps of Army Music. Until August 2021,
the school was based at Kneller Hall
in Twickenham, moving to the Alford Schools of Military Music HMS Nelson in Portsmouth following the closure of Kneller Hall. At their new location Army and
Royal Marine musicians train alongside eachother for some joint training serials e.g. Concert band.
The Royal Corps of Army Music is the largest employer of musicians in the UK, and unlike most training establishments, potential recruits undertake a musical audition
(specialist interview) prior to regular Army selection. Musicians are taken at various standards based on their potential, and
the length of training is dependent on the individual trainee’s ability. The Fixed Mastery Variable Timetable (FMVT) programme enables musicians to complete training in as little as 2 weeks and up to 2 years.
Many of the trainees on parade at DATR’s Open Day today will complete their training in the near future and find themselves on state ceremonial duties such as the Edinburgh Tattoo, Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance and the King’s Birthday Parade.
