to that commemorating the loss of MV ATLANTIC CONVEYOR, the merchant vessel which was also struck by two air launched Exocet missiles and subsequently sank with the loss of twelve Royal and Merchant Navy personnel.
In addition, many coastal walks were participated in and more penguins than one could pick up were sighted, walked closely to (without causing any distress) and photographed, together with what could loosely be termed a safari trek to Whale Point. Sadly, there were no whales but there were both penguins, a shipwreck and a host of elephant seals which live up to their name – four tons or so of mobile blubber one would not wish to argue with. Likewise, being downwind of them was not a joy as they pong somewhat, more so than a penguin colony!
By this time the Squadron mascot which had been kidnapped from 886 (City of Ripon) Squadron and goes by the name of Cadet Oinky, had been photographed en route from Brize Norton, on the Voyager passenger plane, with both Gentoo and Magellanic penguins, and elephant seals. A quick addition to his wardrobe was a length of cord, as the

wind was such at some locations that there was a real danger he could be “blown away” both by the surroundings and the wind, and the cord ensured that should any of the wildlife decide he looked like a tasty snack that he could quickly be hauled back to save his bacon. In addition, anywhere where it was considered appropriate, he was photographed partaking of the views and even made his own entry to the Stanley Totem pole showing he was 8250 miles from his squadron.
The whole experience was made excellent by the warm welcome and hospitality by all whom
I met in the Falkland Islands although the flight was one which would not possibly be relished on a more regular frequency. On leaving Stanley I was
