presented with a Tourist feedback form and rather tongue in cheek, but genuinely, I voted Chris Moorey as Tour Guide of the Year, not only for his battlefield guides but also for his extensive and enthusiastically delivered knowledge of the wildlife of the islands.
I am sure I would not have seen and had identified for me, without his sharp eyes, so many different bird species, which was a great delight. I do trust he receives due recognition, but suspect it was aimed more at cruise ship guides! Next year, as I shall be returning at about the same time, I would like to extend the battlefield and nature tours to see some of the sights not managed on this occasion and wonder if any other Squadron mascot may mysteriously find its way to me for an exclusive and not to missed experience.
Please note that no penguins, elephant seals or pigs were harmed during the visit.
Postscript. I was privileged to represent the Lord-Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire at
a commemoration service which took place at Hull Minster for the South Atlantic Medal Association 1982, in early April and met many veterans who had served during the conflict, some at Mount Longdon, which made both my visit and the service extremely relevant. Many of the veterans also paraded in Hull the following week for the Freedom Parade and it was an honour and delight to be asked to “inspect” them before the march past.
Honest, the fish was this big when I caught it! A Gentoo penguin.
Say again, over! Two elephant seals
On the menu today – fish!
