                                  All change for South
Yorkshire District
Sea Cadets
As part of a wider project across Eastern Area Sea Cadets, spanning from Scarborough to St Albans, Norwich to Leighton Buzzard, a transition in District organisation was sought to meet the primary aim, to strengthen district teams, and move to a more manageable, more equitable district model.
South Yorkshire District was one of the smaller districts in Eastern Area having five Units, which meant that there was a smaller pool of staff and facilities available to offer support for training and recreation.
Prior to 1 April 2024 Eastern Area was made up of 11 Districts which varied in size, and which broadly met RFCA boundaries, with some districts having only 5 units, with others upwards of 8. Following a period of consultation Eastern Area 2024 or EA24 for short was launched to address this need.
The result of the project is that as of the 1 April 2024
the existing South Yorkshire Units (Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham, Sheffield and Thorne) have joined Chesterfield, Mansfield and Worksop to form the Northwest District of Eastern Area with its Royal Marine Cadet Detachments forming 3 Troop.
A map showing the districts is shown, together with the new crest for the district, and the commander of the district is Lieutenant Commander Fraser Avill.
The origins of the new district crest are that it unifies the 3 flags of the new counties into one, which the Units of South Yorkshire can identify with.
