Town Council Precept 2019/20
Thrapston Town Council is requesting a 6.46% increase to the Town Council’s proportion of council tax for 2019/20 equating to an extra £9.11 per year for a Band D property (76p per month or 171⁄2p per week).
This will not only enable the Town Council to continue providing and maintaining its current services but it does allow for growth in the months to come.
Chairman of the Town Council, Cllr Craig Wheeler explained: “We do everything we can to keep the precept we set as low as possible and this is demonstrated by the fact that we have one of the lowest precepts for Town Councils in the area.
Despite this, we are having to ask for an extra £9.11 a year for a Band D property to enable us to maintain our current
level of service as well as allowing for additional financial pressures. Given the uncertain future of our own Library here in Thrapston and given the challenging times we face ahead with the County Council and the Local Government Reform*, we feel it is imperative that we allow funds for additional financial pressures that we may face.”

*The Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government has requested proposals from councils across Northamptonshire to replace the existing two-tier system of local government. This request follows a report from inspector, Max Caller into the finances of Northamptonshire County Council. Northamptonshire’s borough, district and county councils have worked with appropriate partners and the government toward proposals which put residents’ needs at the heart of any solution. This proposal is now with the Secretary of State for him to make a decision. There are still many challenges to overcome, not least the increasing cost of adult social care, and whatever the outcome, the solution must be sustainable in the long term.
