The Black Deer and Charlie Rabbit
‘Sorry, Andrew. I think I’ve wasted your time,’ said Pete.
‘Not a problem. We’ll hang on for a while longer; it may return. Surely you can tell the RSPB what we have just seen. I saw it too, remember,’ said Andrew.
‘What I will do is get in touch with Laura Rogers. She’s the local county bird recorder. I’ll get the camera fixed and come back another morning. Are you still interested?’
‘Of course,’ said Andrew, yawning.

‘Would you like a cooked breakfast?’ called Mrs Weston when her husband opened their kitchen door.
‘A cup of coffee first, Lisa,’ he replied taking off his boots. ‘I’ll just get changed. Where are the kids? I want to tell them about the huge bird that I have seen.’
The smell of bacon and eggs wafting from the kitchen prompted three pairs of feet to bound down the staircase and take their seats at the table. Mr Weston started to tell Emma, Jacob and Lily about the bird and the hide.
‘Is that the same bird that was at the top of the conifer trees on Friday morning?’ asked Lily as she calmly spread butter on her toast.
Mr Weston was astounded. ‘You saw it, Lily?’
‘Yes, of course, and I did a drawing. I’ll show you, Dad,’ she said pushing her chair back from the table.
‘Breakfast first, young lady. There will be time enough for big birds after you have finished eating,’ warned her mother.
