Charlie Rabbit was a builder and a single parent. Together with his friends, Sam Hedgehog, a toolmaker, and Alfie Squirrel, a carpenter, they had built a new woodland community in the Wylder Valley. The animals had lived together since fleeing the forest where trees and woodland had been destroyed to make way for a car-park, nature trail and adventure centre.
They lived in a wildlife garden that belonged to Mr and Mrs Weston and their three children, close to the village of Kemps Heath and Wyldersham, a small market town.
