1 RIFLES
  Development
in Beachley
Barracks
Whilst the Bn was deployed on OP TOSCA the UK based group, which comprised of A, B and HQ Companys, conducted JNCO development.
The plan was to conduct a full
day’s training specifically for the
JNCOs once a month, the first Tuesday of every month which was branded
as “Tactical Tuesdays”. The training objectives would cover a wide array
of G1-9 functions which would be planned and delivered by JNCOs. This would comprise of four development sessions, the first being a green PT session, as this was highlighted by
the RSM as an area of improvement. LCpl Hawkes (PTI) would deliver a robust green PT style event, focusing on moving casualties and ensuring our JNCOs were able to move rapidly with weight. The remaining three sessions would have a theme, such as CASEVAC or S Company assets such as Recce & Snipers. It allowed JNCOs to concentrate on their own development and widen their knowledge of new subjects.
All of this was focused on developing the low-level leadership within 1 RIFLES and meeting the RSM’s intent that our JNCOs should be robust and inspiring leaders to our Riflemen. The development continues and it will be put to the test on Ex ASKARI STORM later in the year.

  Ex KORONOS BUGLE
In January, A Coy deployed to Cyprus for five weeks on Exercise KORONOS BUGLE (Ex KB). With a deployment to Kenya on
Ex ASKARI STORM in the autumn now firmly in sight, the Company used Ex KB
to hone its sections, with all activity and training owned by the Corporals and
Lance Corporals. The exercise was split into a four-way rotation, with each section independently conducting Live Fire Tactical Training (LFTT), a blank firing exercise, Adventure Training (AT) and a week of cultural activity. LFTT and AT were both based in Dhekelia, which will be our new home from mid-2023, giving the Riflemen a taste of what life in Cyprus has to offer.
The operating environment of Cyprus made a welcome change to our well-trodden ground in Brecon. Although (perhaps predictably), we encountered one of the worst Cypriot winters in a decade which brought several bouts of very familiar rain. However, in between the downpours the Riflemen encountered glorious sunshine and epic Mediterranean views, all while fighting over challengingly deep valleys, high hilltops ,and dense scrubland. Perfect preparation for an upcoming deployment to Kenya.
The focus on the section level meant that for most of the exercise, both tactical and non-tactical, the sections worked
independently from Company Headquarters and each other. In the tactical phase this meant being self-sufficient, organising their own resupply and receiving orders by radio. In this way they maintained a focus on dispersal while finetuning their section drills. During AT and cultural training, the sections built strong relationships in their teams and empowered the junior Riflemen to plan activities and explore the island.
Awards were given for the best section performances; the top section on the Dry Training Phase was that led by Cpl Elliott Bundy and LCpl Alfie O’Donohoe. Cpl Joshua Thorpe’s section were outstanding on LFTT and LCpl Max Josham delivered the standout cultural activity taking his section to the Troodos Mountains where he delivered excellent skiing lessons.
