EX FROZEN-SWORD
In late March myself and several fellow Riflemen had the opportunity to go to Les Deux Alpes in France to complete our Ski Foundation 1 qualification.
At the beginning of the week the conditions were ideal with good visibility and the piste was perfect. We started grasping the basics on the nursery slopes and as the week went on we progressed to more difficult runs. The increase in difficulty helped us apply the nursery slope lessons and we soon corrected any bad habits.
On our final day, we were assessed to make sure we knew the basics and could apply alpine skiing skills correctly and safely. Typically, this was made difficult by the conditions with visibility being very poor, resulting in more caution being needed. Thanks to a last-minute blizzard the snow
was very thick which made turning a lot harder. Despite more complex conditions, we all managed to carry out safe and “by the book” skiing and our incredibly experienced instructors made light work of the worsening conditions with us.
I have always wanted to try skiing, and really enjoyed my experience. I would highly recommend SF1 to anyone who wants to give it a go. This is one of the many examples of good adventure training the Army and The Rifles can offer.
