Showing Off In Their 10th Anniversary Year
Yeovil Allotments Association held their 10th Annual Show on Sunday 18th August. This is the tenth anniversary
of the Allotment Association’s inauguration, and this year’s show
was one of the best they have ever
had. In all, there were 196 exhibits of vegetables, fruit, flowers and home produce, plus children’s classes. The Mayor (David Recardo, who is himself an allotmenteer and member of the Association) and Mayoress were there, together with Bruce Trigger, the Town Crier, resplendent in full regalia, calling in the visitors. There was also a magnificent display of dahlias, staged by Allotment Association member, Roger Downting, who is a dahlia expert at national level. The Trophies and Awards were handed out by the Mayor, together with Manny Roper (the YAA Chairman).
The Chairman’s Cup for most points
for fruit and veg was awarded to Steve Ridout, who also carried away the Albert Knight Cup for best fruit and veg exhibit with some superb leeks. The Flower Cup was won jointly by Mandy Horner (in her first ever show!) and Manny Roper. Manny’s gladioli also won him the Crystal Vase for best exhibit in the flowers and plants section. Alison Read took both the Home Produce Trophy and the Ann Meyrick Trophy for
most points in show. The Junior Cup was won by Jacob Shaw, aged 7. One of Jacob’s prize-winning entries was a pair of cucumbers which he actually entered into the main show, competing against the adults – a real encouragement
to the old hands, that the future of allotmenteering is going to be in safe hands!
