SUMMER IN THE GARDEN
In the summer months we can start to enjoy the tasty fruits of our labours and relax amongst the lush green growth and fragrant flowers. However, the weather in the first few weeks
of summer can be temperamental so it is wise to be ready to deal with a late frost on tender plants or water young plants who will suffer from desiccating winds or harsh sun.
Weeds will also be enjoying
the summer conditions but
they can be held at bay with the
hoe and those of you who have
applied a generous mulch whilst
the soil was wet and warm in spring will have very few weeds to deal with. The mulch will also help to keep moisture in soil in the height of the summer when rainfall reduces and droughts are a possibility. Water in the cool of the evening or
morning and water the soil, not the plants.
It is also worth taking the time to read up on the watering requirements of
different fruit and vegetables – too much water can affect the taste! Harvesting rainwater not only saves on your water bills but is better for the environment and the plants themselves.
