ROTARY CLUB
Active in Thrapston
Just as September marks the start of meteorological autumn, when the nights begin to get longer and the summer weather changes, the arrival of October means that some of our club activities begin to change too.
Sailability, where members of our club take part in a rota with other Rotary clubs to support the charity in its work at Grafham Water to enable disabled members to enjoy sailing, stops at the end of the month.
We are already planning for our annual hyacinth distribution to people in the local
area and the bulbs, compost and plant pots are already ordered so that they can be planted ready for distribution in the new year. We hope that they will cheer people up in January, a time when it can be gloomy for some after all the Christmas festivities.
Some people might remember that in 2012 there were many celebrations around the country to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II. It was a very special occasion.
The only previous diamond jubilee for any of her predecessors had been for Queen Victoria in 1897. Throughout the nation there were many celebratory events during the year. The club enabled the planting of trees in Thrapston Peace Park to mark the jubilee when local dignitaries, the Vice Lord Lieutenant, the Mayor of Thrapston and Club President Richard Ablett were joined by pupils from Thrapston Primary School and King John Middle School to watch the handing over of the trees to mark this special occasion. Unfortunately, not all the trees have survived, and the club is now liaising with
The representative of the Queen, The Vice Lord Lieutenant Sir John Robinson and Club President Richard Ablett
Thrapston Town Council to plant replacements. Hopefully this will happen this autumn.
Lastly just a reminder that the Thrapston Community Rotary Shoebox Appeal is holding a “Launch Day” at the Plaza Centre on Saturday October 5th from 10am till 1pm at the Plaza Centre. We hope that as many people as possible will support this event and help fill 300 shoeboxes for children in desperate need.
