at Denford and Woodford reported a record number of holidaymakers.
In September 1890 the Northampton Mercury announced the opening of a new Wesleyan Chapel in the village, being erected next to the old one, which was built in 1872 and used as schoolrooms. Of redbrick with stone facings, it was built by Messrs. Freeman and Son from the village. The total cost, including land purchase was £569 15 shillings. The postcard picture was produced by Messrs. Taylor and Downes of Thrapston and Kettering and posted in Islip in 1915. The chapel closed in 1965 due to a decline in church attendance.
The final picture taken in the High Street
is another by Mr Knighton and, although postmarked 9th October 1922, was clearly taken some fifteen years earlier, judging by the
clothing worn. As ever, a group of five children plus one adult have probably been bribed to stand across the road to add some human interest to what would otherwise be a mundane village picture. The sign for the Cock Inn is visible on the green in front of the pub whilst that of the Rose and Crown is just above the wall to the left foreground.
