120 EAGLE AND CARBINE
2ND BATTALION THE HIGHLANDERS ARMY CADET FORCE
A highly successful annual camp was held this year at our Cadet Training Centre Boddam with fieldcraft taking place at the Cadet Training Centre in Dingwall and Adventurous Training held at Rothiemurchus, near Aviemore. Full use was made of the fantastic new classroom facilities in the Ken Masson Learning Suite. Cadets had the opportunity to learn about the CSBTR (Cadet Small Bore Target Rifle) before going on to be the first to use the recently built indoor tube range. Although the camp was spread over a number of locations some distance apart and the weather was less than kind, cadets managed to complete most aspects of the syllabus. Fieldcraft was a particularly difficult package to complete as the training area at Fort George suffered from some torrential rain and thunder- storms forcing the cadets to relocate to Dingwall. Despite the change of location, the Adult Volunteers delivered the fieldcraft package really well and were able to deliver the Cadet Experience to our cadets.
During camp we had a visit from the Army Engagement Team complete with their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) KITS. The team set the cadets various tasks culminating with a “Dragons Den” competition to create a product for the Army and then sell it to the engagement team.
Congratulations are due to SSI Melville on her appointment as Detachment Commander of the SCOTS DG Detachment. SSI Melville, a former cadet in the Detachment commented. “I am incredibly proud to be given the opportunity to lead the Detachment in which I began my cadet career. I am formulating plans to develop the detachment and look forward to the opening of our new detachment building which is nearing completion.”
Cadets at Annual Camp
Every year a shield is awarded to the best 3 star cadet for their endeavours during their training. This year the recipient was Cadet Corporal Katie Brown of the SCOTS DG Detachment.
A contingent of cadets from the SCOTS DG Detachment took part in this year’s Remembrance Day parade in Aberdeen alongside their colleagues from other Aberdeen detachments. The detachment members were proud of their senior cadet, Cadet Corporal Katie Brown, who was the bearer of the Battalion Banner on the parade. Despite her initial nerves, she did a sterling job. Commented Cpl Brown “I felt proud to have been given this opportunity and it was an immense privilege to stand on the steps of the War Memorial alongside veterans who had given so much to defend the freedoms we take for granted today”.
