ON 14 NOVEMBER 2016, 65 students and staff ew to Berlin for the rst Regional Security Exercise. Their mission was to develop an
in-depth, critical understanding of German security and defence issues from a national, regional and institutional
perspective. With Cdre Jeremy Blunden (DACSC) in attendance, the group was welcomed to the heart of the German political and military decision centres.
The programme, which was led by Lt Col Al Geralt (USAF, A Div DS), made it possible to focus on the strategic and operational levels, with visits to the German MOD and later the Bundeswehr Operations Command Centre in Potsdam. This visit also offered a time for re ection at the memorial dedicated to fallen soldiers in recent operations.
At the political level, discussion turned out to be vibrant within the British Embassy, German ‘think tanks,’ the EU Commission and nally during
the Parliamentary Commissioner of the Armed Forces brief within the Bundeswehr Ombudsman’s department. The visit to the Reichstag and its famous glass dome was, however, the pinnacle of our educational immersion.
