  ACSC 20 Sports Olympiad
Lt Col Charlie Harmer
SO IT WAS ON an October afternoon in bright sunshine that the sportsmen and women of ACSC 20 departed the Forum and
made their way to the pavilion to do battle. This was the Sports Olympiad and friendships outside the division would be placed on
hold for at least a couple of hours. Lt Col Justin Baker, as OIC and dressed convincingly as St George, briefed the masses and sent them about their work. Fun was at the heart of this collection of events, from football and rugby 7s to dodgeball and tug o’ war. The prize? Pride, bragging rights for a day or so but ultimately more tightly knit divisions, bonded through competitive sport played in good spirit.
Every event was keenly fought. The golfers began rst and disappeared into their separate arena while football and rugby began in earnest on the sports pitches. For the footballers, B Div dominated.
Having held trials (yes trials) in advance and wearing matching red shirts, those were the only similarities they had to England’s 1966 World Cup winning team. To be fair, they were all over A and C Divisions, as were their rugby stars, led by the twinkle-toed Lt Col Dave Glendenning and Lt Cdr Rob O’Kane. Hockey and Dodgeball went the same way, the latter being more noticeable for the speed with which it was
over than the skill on display. Although A Division fought back valiantly to win the squash and having expended all their overseas students to win the volleyball, they still needed wins at both golf and tug o’ war in order to realistically challenge B in the rowing nale.

More Dodgeball
This was the time for C Division
to enter the fray. Having gallantly
come second in the rugby and
with their golfers still out, C’s tug o’
war team stepped up. Moustachioed, lightweight and unpractised and with Maj Paco
  ...friendships
outside the division would be
placed on hold for at least a couple of hours. ◆◆◆
