A bit harder to get to, unless you have a bit of time, are Kitchwa Tembo and Elephant Rocks, in the South of Kenya close to where the Lions of Tsavo used to roam..... You are unlikely to see anyone else here, apart from the two rangers who will accompany you. And you may well need to either wait for, or skirt well around, the herds of elephants which frequent the area. But what climbing! The most famous route here is Tusker [named
after the generic Kenya beer], five pitches of brilliant IV+ **** climbing, with an absolutely spectacular, but actually very easy traverse pitch, where you can look down between your feet to the elephants an impala grazing below..... There are easier routes [Covenant, Arc of a Diver] and harder routes [Great Tsavo Chimney, Shifta]. The area easily warrants a few days of climbing and exploration.
These are some of the main climbing areas, but there is much more, scattered across Kenya. The Dragons’ Teeth, Frog, etc etc.... Fancy giving it a go? Planning some AT for your unit’s next GRAND PRIX? Then find out much more from either at www.mck.or.ke or on the Moun- taineering Club of Kenya Facebook group.
