A QUICK SPORT CLIMBING UPDATE
As at 31 Mar 21
Paddy Snow – Vice Chairman (Sport)
For the second time, unfortunately, my sport climbing update can essentially be summarised as Nothing
Significant To Report. As with many other Army sports, we have not been able to re-start competitions in the gaps between national lockdowns. As I write, in March 2021, we are tentatively beginning to exit lockdown and I am hopeful that, by the time you read this in summer 2021, we will be well on the way to a return to something approaching normality; this
is certainly what we are targeting for climbing, with planning already underway by Kenny for the 2021/22 Armed Forces Bouldering League.
In this context I think it would be unwise for me to publish, in March, precise details of what the competition season will look like in autumn 2021. Suffice to say that we will be seeking to lay on a full AFBL season if possible, but that the format may be adjusted to account for any remaining
constraints (and to manage numbers, given the record attendance in the last season: 2019/20). Watch out for updates on the website, AMA Facebook Page, and DINs. We also intend to lay on a major Army Championships event in May 2022, with an Olympic-theme. Again, details will be promulgated by DIN closer to the time.
In the meantime, have a great summer, hopefully involving climbing.
AMA SECRETARY’S UPDATE
Roy Davies – AMA General Secretary
Even though most mountaineering activity has been curtailed during the pandemic, the AMA office continues to support members. Whilst not the most
exciting part of the AMA it is critical to our activities in good years and bad. Emma has worked from home for a significant part of the year and continues to do so. If members have queries, they can call (the office number has a voicemail message with her numbers) or email her and she will support you. Key areas:
• We are looking to reduce our environmental footprint and the overall cost incurred by reviewing how we will issue membership cards. The end state which we will aim for is a digitised version.
• There are members who have not set up their Tahdah account which means that emails are not being received. In addition, by opting out of ‘Marketing Emails’ – which are solely from the AMA, means that key information about meets, expeditions and other AMA activity may not be delivered.
• If you are struggling to link another Tahdah profile, for example Mountain Training to your AMA profile, please call email as she can get them linked together easily.
• The company which run Tahdah have found the past year challenging. Low staff numbers and limited resources have constrained where they want to be as a company. However, we have a good working relationship and along with other users of the service recently had a conference call where the future of the company and its service was heading. In short it is positive, but common with many businesses it will take a while to recover. The core reasons behind moving to Tahdah remain sound and they continue to provide a GDPR compliant solution for us which ensures that both personal and payment information are secured.
Finally, should any member wish to be part of the committee please get in-touch before 25 Jun (90 days before the AGM). There will be further updates via email to ask for people to come forward and volunteer prior to the cut-off date.
