In the 2 years since the last instalment of the Regimental journal, 3/29 (Corunna) Battery has been characteristically busy
with the usual mix of Exercises that will be familiar to all: Ex SUNDERLAND DAG- GER has maintained a steady drumbeat on our annual Exercise calendar; 2021 was focused on preparations and validation with 1 R IRISH Battlegroup through CAST and Ex WESSEX STORM; and the 2022- 2023 focus was on forging an impressive tight-knit Battlegroup with 2nd Battalion Royal Anglian Regiment following the Regiment’s resubordinating to 7 Light Mechanised Brigade Combat Team.
As ever, the Battery’s performance has been exceptional. The national response to, and recovery from, the conditions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic brought new challenges to the Battery, leading COVID testing in the North West of England whilst simultaneously manag- ing and maintaining their training and fit- ness for their warfighting role. The Battery has also been deployed in support of the civilian authorities in response to Storm Arwen in November 2021 and in response to UK Border Force industrial action over Christmas 2022.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has had a sig- nificant impact on the Battery; 13 members of the Battery deployed at short notice in support of 88 Bty’s Agile Task Force deployment to Estonia. Closer to home, the invasion has re-focused our training and given renewed purpose and energy to our core business. In response, 3/29 Bat- tery has led with modernising training to increase Gun Group survivability: we have
written a detailed and comprehensive set of Gun Group SOPs; refocused CRTC’s understanding of how a Gun Group should Exercise on WESSEX STORM; designed, built and operated from gun pits – for the first time ever in many cases; built a surviv- ability training area on Alanbrooke Airfield; and defined our training around the Land Warfare Centre’s ‘12 for 23’ pacing threat.
All of this represents an impressive jump in our operational capability prior to assum- ing VJTF(L) readiness in January 2024. The Tac Gp has also deployed to Oman with our partnered 2 ROYAL ANGLIAN BG as part of Ex DESERT KHANJAR. Practising and honing skills in a more challenging desert environment, the teams were able
