Carving Tips
• Use a pen to mark where you will slice the top of the fruit off before cutting with a sharp serrated knife.
• Use a smaller knife to cut out a
circle around the top so you can scoop out the middle with a spoon. If the flesh is still quite thick around the outside, you may want to thin this by scraping with your spoon on the side you intend to carve.
• Draw the eyes, nose, and mouth on your pumpkin (remember to add some teeth!) and then use your knife to carve these out, whilst holding the pumpkin firmly with your other hand. If you fancy getting creative, use a template to trace a spooky image onto the
pumpkin to carve instead!
• Push out the pieces of flesh and wipe off
any remaining pen before placing a tea light
inside and replacing the top of the pumpkin.
• If you want to avoid using sharp knives around little ones and ensure your pumpkin looks eye-
catching during the day as well as night, you could opt to paint your pumpkin instead.
