COMPANY TRAINING
Company Training Overview
A (Kimberley) COMPANY
In their rst year at OTC cadets will train with A Company. A Company training follows Module
A as speci ed by Sandhurst in which cadets learn weapons handling, navigation, battle eld rst aid, basic eld craft and section level drills. This introduction to basic soldiering provides the foundation of knowledge that is required in order to develop further leadership qualities and skills.
“A Company was a great introduction. Thanks to the PSIs’ instruction we quickly learnt the basics of eld craft, rst aid and leadership. Because of this we were able to take advantage of the opportunities to get extra military, leadership and adventurous training. It was also a great way to meet new people in the evenings after training and at social events.” – OCdt Musker, UEA, A Coy
B (Ladysmith) COMPANY
Typically in an of cer cadets second year at the OTC they will be part of B Company where they are taught the mechanics of a platoon attack and the combat estimate and orders process. This is taught over a number of drill nights and weekend exercises. The Cadets will all prepare a combat estimate and a set of orders for a platoon attack which they will execute at the end of the exercise with Cadets rotating through command appointments. This allows them to learn at every level how a platoon functions
and familiarises them with not only the platoon commander position but also other command roles within a platoon. The training year has previously culminated in PRACTAC where the cadets are assessed on their ability to prepare and deliver both a combat estimate and a set of platoon orders. This however has now changed and in future the Of cer Cadets will be assessed within their command appointments as platoon commanders.
“B Company gave me a grounding in the orders process and gave me the experience and building blocks to learn how to lead a platoon. These experiences have been invaluable in getting to grips with my leadership style and how the mechanisms of an infantry platoon work.” – OCdt Ricky Burrows, UEA, B Coy
C (Mafeking) Company
C Company is for of cer cadets who have completed both Module A and Module B in
their previous years in the OTC and as such
is focused on more advanced leadership, adventurous training and Main Board practice and preparation. As such it allows the cadets greater exibility in their third year at university. For the main exercises of the year C Company cadets are given command appointments in mixed company platoons to further develop their military leadership.
