38 EAGLE AND CARBINE
Having experienced the difficulties with training during a global pandemic you wouldn’t think things could get any more challenging and along comes Training Year 22!
The training wing team had the task of not only loading personnel to career and mandated courses but also ensuring that those deploying on OP NEWCOMBE (Mali - both rotations 4 & 5), completed Mission Specific Training (MST) in order to enable a successful deployment.
As required, the training team would complete courses as part of their own career development but remained key in the process of qualifying 14 Light Cavalry Crew Commanders, 5 JKL D&M Instructors, 4 Signals Instructors, 9 RAC Junior Commanders, 10 JKL Drivers, 12 JKL (Platform) Commanders and 3 Panther (PCLV) Drivers. From Jan 2022 to Jan 2023 there has been 892 courses booked for personnel throughout the regiment, as always, a fantastic effort aided by an extremely capable team – in particular Cpl (Johnno) Johnston who has one of the best jobs in the
department... so many course applications and each one particular in its own special way...
Various exercises across the services called upon the experience of the training wing team, SSgt Wright was utilised as Observer Mentor for Light Dragoons during their Ex Wessex Storm whilst Sgt (Johnny) Mclelland was tasked with assisting 51X as a Defence Driving Examiner. It is always challenging working in a small team when there is an expectation of a big output, not exclusive to the training wing. Made difficult by trawls (assisting other units with competency deficiencies) and for that SCOTS DG should be proud in knowing that there is a huge chunk of workforce that thrives on achieving goals due to their understanding of the need.
