extremely unusually two more mid airs occurred with tragically a Japanese pilot Mazakazu Kobayashi suffering fatal injuries on the last day. This was a somber end to a World Class Event and was a sad reminder of the dangers of our beloved sport, something which, as pilots, we avoid dwelling on but accept as a known risk.
In the Team Event GB came 5th with two of our pilots placing in the top 10. I was extremely proud to have been selected as TM and be a part of the competition and hope that my presence provided logical and helpful assistance to those who needed it.
Although Hang Gliding is no longer available as AT, paragliding instruction and funding support is. If you wish to investigate this amazing sport which allows you to fly like a bird and see the world through a different perspective look at the British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (BHPA) website or contact me at MDHU Portsmouth for further information.

 Inter-Nursing
Services Tennis
Tournament 2014
After a previous defeat in 2013 it was time to face battle again in the 2014 Inter-Nursing Services Tennis Tournament. Sadly the QARNNS were unable to raise a team so it was time once again to go head to head with the reigning champions, the PMRAFNS, in a bid to win back the Inter-Nursing Service Tennis title back; not held by the QARANC since 2004!!
Our sprightly team consisted of: Lt Col Tess Grieves RRC (Capt) Lt Col Penney - Reserve
Maj John Liddel
Cpl Muthoni Ligale Pte Tevin Gama Pte Kelly Trevillion
The day commenced with the Men’s and Ladies singles who both gave sterling performances. Newcomer Cpl Muthoni Ligale QARANC gave it her all throughout a very tough Ladies’ Singles match against seasoned opponent Wg Cdr Fin Bradley PMRAFNS in a strenuously-fought two sets in 30 degree heat. We were provided with an excellent performance from both sides, but in the end the PMRAFNS went onto win the match. The Men’s Singles saw a high standard of tennis played by Pte Tevin Gama QARANC against his opponent Sgt Chris Andrews PMRAFNS, providing the spectators with some excellently skilled tennis and another gallant effort by Pte Gama winning easily in two sets. Result from the morning: QARANC – 1, PMRAFNS – 1. It was all to play for in the afternoon doubles!
After a well-earned and delicious lunch generously provided by the QARANC Association, we cracked on with the Ladies Doubles and Mixed Doubles. Lt Col Tess Grieves QARANC and Maj John Liddel QARANC teamed up to secure a convincing win against Flt Lt Paul Lafferty PMRAFNS and Sqn Ldr Jo Potter PMRAFNS in the Mixed Doubles. Meanwhile on the adjacent court Cpl Muthoni Ligale QARANC and Pte Kelly Trevillion QARANC gave a valiant performance though were sadly outplayed by the FS Beccy Ayotte PMRAFNS and Sgt Jo Baldwin PMRAFNS; losing in two sets. Results from the afternoon were QARANC – 2, PMRAFNS - 2. The suspense was too much and it was down to the Tournament Referee to do some careful calculating of games and due to the QARANC winning significant games in their Ladies Doubles match this secured the overall title and the QARANC as victors!
The QARANC, that’s who! Now the cup is back where it belongs after a long 10 years – adorning the trophy cabinet in AMD in Camberley. Victory is o’so sweet!
A great day was had by all. Thank you to our kind supporters who faithfully cheered us on continually oozing encouragement from the sidelines. Thank you to the PMRAFNS for the excellent tennis and the QARANC will look forward to another challenging tournament in 2015.
