OUNDLE MUSEUM
This rather unusual item we have in our store at the Museum is a portable ‘Roulette Wheel’. It is made from tin and is slightly larger
than a dinner plate in size. It is said to have been confiscated by the police at the Oundle racecourse during the early part of the 19th Century!
There is evidence that a racecourse existed
in Oundle from a small advertisement in
the Stamford Mercury from 1722. A two day meeting was advertised in the newspaper to take place in October 1722 either in ‘The meadow’ or on the ‘new course’ implying that a decision on the venue was left to the last minute in case of flooding. The Meadow was said to be one of the best courses in England and was probably Hern Meadow where Hern Road is today.
Our roulette wheel was donated to our collection by the curator of the Police Museum in Northampton.
