Cavalry Memorial Parade Hyde Park 2021
The 97th Combined Cavalry Memorial Association weekend was carried out by virtual podcast for a second year running hosted by HQ RAC which proved yet again to be a well followed event.
As this service ended, we started to look ahead to the 2022 gathering which will hopefully by then see the nation return to a normal parade format, and taking place once more at the bandstand in Hyde Park.
I am sure when we are allowed to assemble in numbers once again after the pandemic, that we will have a larger than normal attend- ance at the service let’s hope so!

After two years of cancelled Field of Remembrance parades in London we were allowed once again back into the familiar grounds of the Abbey. The pan- demic has certainly left its mark.
The return of the service was however noticeably different. The Royal British Legion informed all Associations that we were only being issued three tickets for Association members plus a head of plot pass which Brig Angus Watson MBE as Colonel of the Regiment was allocated as The Light Dragoons representative. This was all due to repair work on the outside of the Abbey annex taking a large part of the grassed assembly area clos- est to the building. Our three members consisted of myself Maj Mel Tazey MBE, Barry (Luther) Morris as Chairman of the Southern Branch and In-Pensioner David Lines from the Royal Hospital Chelsea.
We also saw Lt Col Nick Southward OBE on parade, he had managed to obtain his ticket through the Czech contingent who parade each year and who he has a close affiliation with, Colin Elwell Esq ex LD was parading with the Yeomanry Regiments this year who had a good chat with us all before the service.
The parade was attended by Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Cornwall rep- resenting the Royal household with The Dean of Westminster Abbey, The Very Reverend David Hoyle alongside her. The day was quite warm for the time of year, which always helps.
After the service our small contingent assembled in the nearby Sanctuary House Hotel for a pint of their local ale and here, we met up with the Commanding Officer Lt Col Jon Harris and the Regimental Sergeant Major WO1 L Iddon before we all took a leisurely walk to the Cavalry and Guards Club for a 1330hrs Trustees meeting.
Everyone hopes that the 2022 service will be back to normal when we can request our usual 30 tickets and thereby invite more of our members to the days service, for dia- ries this will take place Thursday 10th November 2022.
