Christmas Cake Bake Off Selection
Of course, being on operations doesn’t mean Christmas is post- poned. The month of December came with little to no rest for the catering department; no wonder it is referred to as ‘silly sea- son’ for chefs. With extra-curricular activities on top of such a busy period the department introduced a ‘Christmas Bake-Off’ to practice/demonstrate the cake baking skills of the BG chefs. From gingerbread houses to a Stollen masterpiece, 15 unique cre- ations were made with fantastic results. Unfortunately, there can only be one winner and after meticulous judging (and tasting by the CO) that led to some very close scores, the overall winner for all categories went to Cpl Hopkins. 1st Prize for the impressive Stollen went to WO2 St. Jean with the guarantee of providing his Gluten free recipe, 2nd Prize, went to LBdr Wearing, an awesome achievement given he is a novice. 1st Prize Cake decoration went jointly to LCpl Serukeitoga and Pte Dickson and 2nd place to Pte Nero. 1st place Gingerbread centrepiece to Cpl Hopkins and 2nd place to Cpl Marope.

Dishi Rishi - The Prime Minister Rishi Sunak & Kaja Kallas serving the Soldiers Christmas Dinner
To top off December we had a special visit from the UK and Estonian Prime Ministers in the DFAC to pay tribute and to boost the troops morale by serving Christmas dinner; a gesture that was well received by everyone present. Prime Ministers Rishi Sunak and Kaja Kallas were welcomed by the RCWO where he gave an insight into the dining facility and the chefs’ daily activi- ties. The UK PM being taken aback by the fact 19 chefs fed up c.1200 Troops, providing a minimum of three meals a day with shifts that spanned 0430 – 2000hrs!
On December 25th the catering department went all out pro- viding a meal fit for the occasion - ‘Christmas on the farbank’. Being on operations away from families and loved ones during the festive season can have a huge impact on mental health, both physically and emotionally. However, the team were completely mindful of this, making sure a traditional Christmas Dinner was the pinnacle of this celebrations. As we look to the end of tour, we will continue to do our best by providing the best food we can.
