Chinless wonders – Lts Cavendish, Brown, Palmer-Price, and Oldroyd doing what the Mess does best (shame about the skiing)
to play the Mess late into the night. This event was also the first official outing for ‘Mega Speaker’ of which you will no doubt read more about in Officers’ Mess articles for years to come; its air- horn the rallying cry of the subaltern and the scourge of the PMC. The year had certainly started in fine fettle.
Winter Sports were once again on the rise, with all their asso- ciated chinnery. Cresta was un-ably led by Capt Barrell, who fortunately for him had Lt Hill to save his blushes, and Alpine skiing enjoyed a bumper year over Christmas and New Year. Lt Brown clocked up nine weeks in the mountains with four officers deployed to Verbier – that’s the kind of trawl we like, Ops. After three long weeks in that debauched resort the subalterns, having bled the PRI dry, pulled stumps on the ‘exercise’. Mullets freshly shaved and with the taste of WKD and tobacco stained into the back of their throats, the white angels finally arrived to take the bushed Hussars back to Blighty. As they travelled home no one had the serotonin left in their bodies to feel a recognisable sense of happiness, but a feeling was dawning that 2022 was going to go down as a fine vintage.
The age-old adage that ‘the Army giveth, and the Army taketh away’ was certainly brought home over the spring and summer
