The Corporals’ Mess
The following couple paragraphs are all about the Cpl’s mess – if you hadn’t gathered by the title - so close in, take a knee, and pin your ears back.
The first item on the agenda for the year was the Platinum Jubilee celebrations. Close behind various exercises we had only a few days to organise the event; so we decorated the mess with the best pictures of the Queen we could find, Union flags and a balloon arch that come the hour, was bursting a balloon a second due to a heatwave. Entertained with an acoustic band, hog roast and bring your own bottle (or crates, what could go wrong?) we had all the Cpl’s Mess Members, as well as the members of the Regiment who were eligible for the Jubilee Medal but not yet in the mess. Medals were handed out by the RSM WO1 C. Donald. The event was a great way to celebrate this special occasion.
The Cpl’s mess also commissioned a cup in memory of LCpl C. Abbott, and now if the Cpl’s mess ever wins the annual Abbott’s Cup football match which is played against the WO’s & Sgt’s mess, we have the perfect place to display it!
Throughout the year and over the Summer standdown many members of the mess committee organised the summer function at the Stones Hotel. This was to be a formal sit-down meal, as many members had never experienced it before. Endless trips to the venue and hoops to jump through were required to get this mess function off the ground - you name the problem, we faced it. In-fact get this; the events manager was sacked for embezzling money, so the hotel receptionist had to stand up and be the new events manager!
We bid farewell to our then PMC Cpl C. Bennett, on promotion to Sgt and a posting to RWxY as permanent staff. On the night, he handed over to Cpl A. Woodhouse who became the new PMC - who at the same time he handed over PEC to Cpl R. Whitfield...A great night with great company, great food, and a lot of port. Some members of the Cpl’s mess saw their food and port again at the end of the night... Cpl R. Eardley was heard saying you can get mess dress dry cleaned through the QM’s Dept, although I am not sure they’ll accept LCpl E. Lees mess dress...what do you think?
Future commitments are being drafted by the PEC, which include a visit to the Royal Hospital of Chelsea, the Tower of London and the summer function. Connections have been made by Cpl R. Carson to have volunteers go to the Regimental Museum to not only gain knowledge on the history of the Regiment but to give back to our community.
