With a new kit, good turnout, and eager spirit, 2022 looked promising for the Hawks. We were looking forward to hav- ing a few runs out as a team, play some friendly matches and get- ting playing minutes under our belts.
Our first ‘training’ game was against the Irish Guards. Unfortunately, despite our new-found keenness, we were no match for the recruitment office of the Fijian Irish Guards (who definitely didn’t stop outside the Royal Fijian Welsh camp en route to Aliwal). Our lack of experience and training showed as we suffered a heavy defeat, and heavy casualty rate.
There were, however, plenty of positives to build on for future fixtures. That was until the quantity of injuries drew the ire of a grumpy RHQ. It was safe to say that the rugby team posed the single greatest threat to the deployability statistics KRH BG. LCpl Reed’s collar bone, Sgt Cook’s knee, and SSgt Simler’s ankle all fell to the cause. The decision was made... no more rugby.
Despite a premature end to the playing of rugby, this was not the end of rugby and the KRH for the year. Members of the team were called upon to act as flag bearers at several international tests including England vs Ireland, and England vs Japan. A definite highlight was Cpl Hanser and Tpr Tacey bringing on the Killlik Cup for the New Zealand vs Barbarians fixture. Very happily they didn’t drop it, and we may be invited back... so do keep your eyes peeled for sets of crimsons and brown berets bringing a well needed touch of cavalry class to Twickenham at future matches.
A well-earned shout out and congratulations need to be made to Tprs Joseph and Karavaki who had their first runs out for the
RAC team, and to superbly to Cpl Hanser who has continued her good form playing for both the RAC team and Army women’s team, only narrowly missing Tri-Services caps.
Despite the limited minutes on the rugby pitch for 2021/22 and CABRIT deleting any option for 22/23, the only way is up for the Hawks - we have the passion and talent, now just need the opportunity.
