Bishop of Northampton visits Thrapston
On Sunday 4th August The Right Rev Dr David Oakley, Bishop of Northampton, will preside
at the 11.00am Mass in the church of St Paul the Apostle in Thrapston. On this occasion he will bless the chapel dedicated to Blessed Peter Wright, our brother who was killed in hatred to the faith during the Reformation.
We will have the chance to venerate the relic of Blessed Peter on the day. This will be a time of great spiritual renewal for Catholics of our town, both because our chief Shepherd is visiting us and because we remember a man of great faith, like Bl Peter Wright.
Who was Blessed Peter Wright?
Peter Wright was born in 1603 into a poor Catholic family in Slipton, Northamptonshire. His father died when Peter was still young and so he went to work at a solicitor’s office in
Thrapston. Over time he slipped away from the faith of his parents. After working for the lawyer for 10 years, he joined the English military forces in the low countries, but that was not a life for him. In Belgium he came to know the Jesuits in Liège who helped reconcile him to the Church.
He was ordained a priest in 1639 and worked first in education at the Jesuit college in Saint- Omer, France and then as a chaplain to the English soldiers serving in the Spanish army
in Flanders. Then he returned to England and worked first in Hampshire and then in London. Priest hunters knew of his presence and lay in wait for him to show up at the residence of the marquis of Winchester on Candlemas Day. He was arrested and taken to Newgate Prison. He celebrated his last Mass on the morning of his execution and was dragged to Tyburn where 20,000 spectators waited to watch the day’s executions. Peter was hung until he died, and then dismembered. It was a hot Whit Monday, 19th May 1651.
