Territorial Army. On 1st December 1941 she was commissioned as a sister in the T. A. and served abroad as a matron, setting up hospitals in North Africa where she was mentioned
in dispatches, West Africa and the 76 British General Hospital in Italy near Bari. On 13th December 1945 she received the highest nursing award, the Royal Red Cross First Class award, for her service during the war.
In 1950 she was appointed Matron at the Fielding Johnson Hospital in Leicester where, I believe she remained until retirement.
She celebrated her 100th birthday in 1998 at The Bell, Little Addington (photo top right). She died on 21st October 2000, her home
address being Alledge Drive, Woodford.
If you are aware of any ancestors who served
with the Women’s Land Army in the Great
War, and are happy to share details, I would be very pleased to hear from you and, with your permission, pass information to Helen Frost. Amazingly, considering how detailed military records are from the Great War, there is no central registry of Land Army volunteers, so any help is appreciated.
