RIFLEMEN AT THE INFANTRY
TRAINING CENTRE (ITC)
“We are Innovators”.
The last six months has continued to be busy
and recruit training remains the focus. The
Permanent Staff continue to represent the
regiment across ITC and The Rifles cohort has
continued to live the regimental characteristics
and has been a great influence in the
development of training, helping to shape the
modern recruit. Over 50 recruits have joined
the regiment and many Riflemen have passed
through the courses delivered by the Army
School of Ceremonial.
“We Unleash Potential”
Cpl Joe Steel (5 RIFLES) was selected to
represent ITC on Ex Patriot Sword (Bayonet)
2, an exchange programme between Soldier
Academy and the US Army. Between June –
December he served with 2-28 Battalion of
the 198th Inf Reg as a Drill Serjeant delivering
recruit basic training at Fort Moore. Whilst
there Cpl Steel earnt the coveted US Army’s
Expert Infantry Badge alongside his US
counterparts, a course that has an average
of a 15% pass rate. The next ITC nomination is
also a Rifleman, which reinforces the quality of
“We are all Riflemen.”
Section Commanders we have here.
The Infantry Nurturing Team and all
Permanent Staff have a role in attracting
Recruits, ensuring that The Rifles remains the
preferred choice. Once cap badge aligned the
inculcation of regimental ethos starts with
the Recruits receiving their regimental head
dress, War Tales and Characteristics of the
Rifles along with other RIFLES reference
materials. LCpl’s Mitchell and Roka
Magar (3RIFLES, Infantry Nurturing
Team) arrange regular RIFLES
Insight evenings to bring Recruits
and Permanent Staff together
to cover ethos, traditions and
realities of battalion life. PT kit
issue in week 20, with ranks
slides, and TRFs at week 27 help
to solidify our identity.

“We are Swift and Bold”
WO2 Dave Clark (5 RIFLES) continues to push
the limits and has completed yet another
Winter Spine Race covering 108 miles across
the Pennine Way and raising over £3,000.00
for charity pushing his yearly total to £5,722.00
in 2024.
“We are Connected”
Social cohesion continues, bringing the
Riflemen together. Monthly RIFLES RVs
take place increasing the queue time and
donations to the Salvation Army Fund. 2024
closed with a Christmas social in the Sjt’s
Mess arranged by Sjt Lou Roberts. WO2
Dan Lewis put the staff through their paces
and tested everyone’s regimental history
knowledge. A great end to 2024 and on to
some well-earned leave.
