82 RIFLES The Bugle
Ex Frozen Dragon in Snowdonia National Park during September 2021 was the first preparation event for The Rifles Mountaneering Team in anticipation of ardous exercises in Scotland and the Alps in 2022. All
of these exercises will prepare the team for the planned mountaineering expedition to Greeland in 2023.
The Greenland expedition, Ex Frozen Peninsular, is now taking place in July 2023. The original idea was that all these events were a build up to that. The emphasis has now evolved such that we are working towards Ex FP (Greenland) but in fact what we are creating is a RIFLES Mountaineering Team.
The mountaneering teams improvement plan is simple. Gather tough individuals regardless of their mountaneering experience, who share an enthusiasm for mountaneering and provide them with the skillsets to thrive and succeeded in mountainous terrain. All of this will prepare them for future events and hopefully allow the sport of mountaneering to grow within The Rifles.
As for the expedition, all exercise participants spent 5 days obtaining
the Summer Mountain Foundation qualification before learning the skills required to move safely on rocky terrain. Some were even multi-pitching climbing just 3 days after first putting on a harness!
