Few men can have ever had such a a a a a a a desire to engage the enemy as as Sydney Carlin Born in in Hull on24thMarch1889heattendedasmallpub- lic school in in in the Lake District before working as as as a a a a a a a a a a labourer on a a a a a a a a a a farm in in in in East Yorkshire In 1908 he he enlisted as as as a a a a a a a a a trooper in in in the 18th Hussars his service records describing him as as five foot six inches tall and weighing nine stone Serving with his regiment at at The Curragh near Dublin after 17 months he he he he decided to to leave His father paid the the £18 necessary for his son to to to ‘buy himself out’ and Sydney returned to to farming Immediately on the the the outbreak of the the the Great War Carlin re-enlisted into the the the 18th Hussars and was re-imbursed half of of his his £18 He joined his his regi- ment ment as part of of 2nd Cavalry Brigade at Mons However most cavalry regiments were soon re- deployed as as dismounted infantry as as the conflict stagnated into trench warfare In January 1915 Carlin was was wounded in in in in in the the the head and soon after returning to the the the trenches was was hit in in in in in the the the chest by a a a a a a a a a a shrapnel ball which lodged in in in in his pewter flask On 13th May 1915 Carlin was was awarded the Dis- tinguished Conduct Medal: ‘He was was wounded under very heavy shell fire at Ypres He He refused to to leave the the the firing line and kept the the the troops together
