a massive animal lover, the marine life was always going to be my personal show stopper! We saw such a wide variety of fish from large groupers, triggerfish, barracudas and, my personal favourite, the lionfish.
The lionfish is a relatively new fish to the Mediterranean, having entered via the Suez Canal which was recently widened and deepened. Although stunning fish to look at they are problematic because they consume many different types native fish in the area, breed fast and can live up to fifteen years old.
I am pleased to say I am now a qualified ocean diver. Learning this new skill was challenging in parts, pushed me out of my comfort zone and has greatly boosted my overall morale. The course also made me seriously question how the Little Mermaid’s hair managed to stay looking so perfect under the water when I resembled a dishevelled scarecrow the majority of the time. I plan on using the remainder of my time in Cyprus using this new skill and see what else the ocean has to offer.
This week was truly one of the very
best weeks in my entire military career!
I must stress the importance of seeking out adventure training opportunities within the military. With prior approval from the chain of command, I found using the online adventure training portal very easy and the booking process was smooth.
