Another great English breakfast to start our day. Our feet and legs were starting to ache but everyone still carried on with the hike. We started from Greenhead and a couple
of hours into our walk we stopped for some cake provided by Mrs Moore, it was a lovely sugar boost to keep us all going. Lt Col Jess and his wife joined us for the day. Maj Armer and I decided to carry on without
the others as we had a few blisters on the go. We were thinking that it would give us
a head start, but this wasn’t the case at all as every tourist we past wanted a picture
of Maj Armer in his Roman outfit. This was the day we actually walked along the wall, it was amazing scenery but with a few cheeky hills to climb. The “famous tree” from Robin Hood and the Prince of Thieves was also on the route today. A lot of history was taken in today and it was by far the best day. We all went back to the reserve centre for the night and had pizza for dinner.
Day 5
This was our second last day of the walk and we all knew the end was near. I saw the quality of leadership shine through in some people, as others were starting to struggle from doing 70 miles, but we all stuck together and encouraged each other to keep going. We arrived at Fenham Barracks
where we stayed for the night, everyone got washed and dressed and headed into Newcastle for a bite to eat.
Day 6
This was the last day of our walk, and everyone was just raring to get the last miles done and get to the finish line. There was a half hour stop at Wetherspoons for a bite to eat and a pint, and then we were off again to the next checkpoint. There was no stopping us now, we just kept going until we reached Wallsend Segedunum Fort. Finally, 84
miles complete and a tick off the bucket list. Everyone was smiling and laughing as there was no more walking to do, we were glad to see the end of it. We had our lunch, had a look around the museum, bought gifts from the shop and headed back to the Fenham Barracks.
Conclusion
My drive back to Scotland gave me time to reflect on this great experience. This was the first chance I’d had to do something like this in my career, it opened my eyes to the togetherness and camaraderie throughout the dental corps. All in all I had a great experience and hope to have many more opportunities like this in the future.
