Boxing Training Camp
Capt Paul Tyrer
Between 31 Oct and 1 Nov 19, 4 MERCIAN hosted a boxing training camp for the
1 MERCIAN boxing team in preparation
for the Inter Coy and 1 Brigade boxing tournaments. A total of 27 boxers attended the camp at Donnington Amateur Boxing Club (ABC) in Telford. The camp began early on Thursday morning at Donnington ABC where an initial meet and greet took place with the civilian coaching staff who had all given up their time and use of their facilities. Following the introductions, the next stop was the Wrekin, where the boxers had to complete an individual best effort run to summit and back, which certainly got the lungs and legs going in preparation for the day’s activities.

was assisted by Liam Davies, a professional boxer sponsored by the Mercian Regiment,
and Ryan Tyrer, an amateur boxer from Donnington ABC.
Liam has boxed 100 amateur contests winning a national title and a European bronze medal before turning
professional. Ryan has boxed in over 50 amateur contests winning regional titles.

Both Ryan and Liam stepped into the ring and boxed in excess of 40 consecutive rounds against the Mercian boxers providing them with invaluable ringcraft experience and some top tips in the art of hitting without getting hit. Following a busy day, the boxers headed back to Parsons Barracks, Donnington, for some well- deserved rest.
