transport and travelled to Hall Green ABC
in Birmingham. On arrival at Hall Green
the team were met by professional boxer and coach Frankie Gavin. As an amateur Frankie boxed in 121 contests winning 100; he was a member of Team GB winning Gold at the Commonwealth Games in 2006 and was the first ever English boxer to win Gold at the World Championships in 2007. As a professional he has had 30 contests with 26 wins; winning both the British and Commonwealth titles and challenging for the IBF World Title. The team were given a tour of the club and had a Q&A session with Frankie, following which Frankie handed out a number of complementary tickets to Hall Green’s boxing show that weekend to local MERCIANs.
This was a very productive camp which
1 MERCIAN Boxing Team with Frankie Gavin and Capt Paul Tyrer, 4 MERCIAN
highlighted the strong pairing between
1 and 4 MERCIAN; utilising the sporting numbers of the Regular Battalion with
the local knowledge and contacts of the Reserve Battalion. Events like this could not take place without strong community engagement and we thank Head Coach Tristan Davies for the use of Donnington ABC, Simon “Bavs” Baverstock for some excellent coaching, Frankie Gavin at Hall Green ABC and of course Liam Davies and Ryan Tyrer for putting the rounds in. We now look forward to the next training camp in 2020. Stand Firm, Strike Hard!
