Unfortunately, our meeting on Dahlias planned for the end of May had to be cancelled due to last minute venue issues but we hope to rearrange this talk for a later date.
In June, our members visited Burnby
Hall at Pocklington as a follow-up to the talk given to us in November 2022 by Peter Rogers - Assistant Estate Manager. The weather was perfect, and it was great to hear how the gardens have been restored and upgraded sympathetically with their history in mind. An inspirational and tranquil outcome has been achieved. The waterlilies were in bloom and the fish were hungry!
I am looking forward to the National Championships at Newby Hall in September and I feel honoured to have been invited to be one of the judges this year. It will be interesting to see how
exhibitors are overcoming the extreme weather conditions of the last few years in order to produce top quality blooms, fruit and vegetables for the show bench.
Whether or not these weather conditions are the result of ongoing and permanent climate change, or just a short-term aberration, remains to be seen. I expect that ‘elite’ exhibitors will be willing and able to invest their time, money, and effort in order to control their growing environments and produce more stable conditions. However, for the average ‘amateur’ gardener and local ‘village’ show participant who may
not be able to adapt to these conditions, I am left wondering whether show dates, or the class contents, will need to be modified in order to provide a worthwhile event for the visiting public to see. Let us not forget also that the Society relies on new recruits
who grow up predominantly through the amateur grower ranks.
Traditionally, East Yorkshire and West Yorkshire DA Shows are held on the same weekend to enable members to exhibit their produce at both events. The date of the EYDA Show is confirmed as Sunday 1st October 2023 and will be held at Cherry Lane Garden Centre, Beverley.
Reports on our July visit to Hessle Allotments and our Autumn events will feature in the next edition of Simply Vegetables but, in the meantime, our programme of planned events and current news can be seen on our website http:// nvseyda.uk. and Facebook page. Our continued aim is to provide a variety of interesting topics throughout the year that will appeal to our existing members, as well as attract new ones.

 NEDDA Report
In July, the D.A. took up the invite of Peter and Mary Glazebrook to visit their garden. It was during the period of the non-stop rain, well rain day after day. On the afternoon/evening of the visit the weather turned from a dull dank rainy day into a warm dry sunny summers evening. They do say the sun shines on the righteous.
The evening was filled with laughter, gossiping with friends, renewing old acquaintances and not forgetting being overwhelmed by the magnitude and quality of Peter’s giant vegetables.
The scale and dedication on which Peter gardens is second to none, particularly when he was asked several times; how many gardeners do you employ? Peter does all the gardening himself which is testament to the dedication and commitment he gives to growing vegetables (I’m sure Mary gives him a helping hand every now and then though).
Mary
Last but not least during our visit, Mary furnished the table with a wonderful finger buffet for us to sample. This seen with the picture of John Goodall and Bill Taylor sampling the goods. Mary is pictured pouring tea into the best Bone-China with Bill and Ron eagerly waiting for their cuppa.
Although the D.A. has been relatively quite on the function front, the D.A.’s judges have been busy supporting the local show, such as Ashover, Hepworth Lane, Brimington, Lowdon, Beeston to name a few.

Our D.A. Show is being held on Sunday 3rd September, so fingers crossed their will be a full show report with pictures in our next report.
For the remainder of the year, we have 2 guest speakers:
October; The Garden Guru – Mark Smith November; The Orchard Year – Adrian Baggaley
We continue to hold our meeting at Pleasley Miners Welfare NG19 7PD. Start time is usually about 19:45hrs.
