Pinewood School – a unique learning experience
Pinewood School, set in 84 acres of beautiful rural countryside, prides itself on providing all pupils from Nursery to Year
8 with a unique learning experience and holistically developing the ‘whole’ child.
The press recently has been full of analysis – largely negative - of the British education system, be it Eve Jardine-Young (CLC) questioning the value of homework (or prep as we know it in the private sector), Peter Tait, the outgoing Head of Sherborne Prep asking whether fundamentally we are testing children the right way about the right things (how
do we measure creativity?), many London publications bemoaning the rise of the tutor and the over-worked, overstressed child, and the Head of a leading girls’ school advocating that her girls must learn that perfection is not the ultimate goal.
Mindfulness and wellbeing seem to be the buzz words to counter the pressures of a system that seems to value data over doing. Where does the balance in this argument lie?
Headmaster, Philip Hoyland, would argue
that it comes down to nding the right balance between developing IQ and EQ and that parents must accept that their aspirations for their offspring may not match those of the school which the child attends.
We need, above all, to develop character. Children who can work as a team (sport is so important here, as is Music (ensembles) and the Outward Bound experience - be it D of E or CCF), learn to develop self-reliance, resilience and initiative and this is why the private sector places such an emphasis on the co-curricular elements of life at school.
Children should be educated to be comfortable with the language of tolerance, compassion, empathy, service and duty. They need to learn the value of respect
and manners. They need, in short, to leave school sincere in feeling, con dent in action, eloquent in thought and honest in endeavour.
